👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Prep the Bread:

Slice the kifli or bread into 1-inch rounds. Let them dry out slightly if they’re still soft.

2. Sweet Milk Mixture:

Heat milk with sugar and vanilla until warm (not boiling). Pour over the bread slices in a large bowl and let soak for 5–10 minutes until softened but not falling apart.

3. Assemble:

Butter a baking dish. Layer the soaked bread slices, sprinkling each layer with ground poppy seeds, lemon zest, and optional raisins.

Drizzle a bit of melted butter over the top.

4. Bake:

Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20–25 minutes until lightly golden and fragrant.

🥄 Optional Vanilla Custard Sauce:

Whisk egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and a little cold milk in a pot. Add remaining milk and cook gently, stirring, until it thickens. Pour warm over servings.

❤️ To Serve:

  • Serve warm with a drizzle of custard or even apricot jam.
  • Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with honey for a rustic feel.
  • In Hungary, it’s often eaten around Christmas, but honestly? It’s perfect all year round.
