🥔 Shlishkes – Hungarian Potato Dumplings

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dough:
    • Mix mashed potatoes, egg, and salt in a bowl.
    • Gradually add flour until a soft but not sticky dough forms. It should be pliable and hold together.
  2. Shape the dumplings:
    • On a floured surface, roll dough into ropes about ½ inch thick.
    • Cut into 1-inch pieces (you can shape them like small logs if you like).
  3. Boil the dumplings:
    • Bring a pot of salted water to a boil.
    • Add dumplings in batches and cook until they float to the top (about 2–3 minutes).
    • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well.
  4. Prepare the breadcrumb topping:
    • In a large skillet, melt butter and add breadcrumbs.
    • Toast over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant (add sugar if making a sweet version).
  5. Coat the dumplings:
    • Add the cooked dumplings to the skillet and toss gently until coated with breadcrumbs.

🍽️ How to Serve:

  • Savory: As a side dish with goulash or stews.
  • Sweet: Sprinkle extra sugar and cinnamon on top and serve warm.
